If you’re local to Kilburn or nearby and haven’t been to the Derbyshire Toy Libraries Stay and Play session yet, I honestly can’t recommend it enough.
I have been coming here since I moved to the area - my eldest was two years old at the time - and now I come with my youngest who is three. The room is bright and open with so many toys and activities for all ages scattered around. There’s always something different to keep them busy, whether it’s playdough, stamping and colouring to help with their fine motor development, or riding up and down the little rollercoaster (yes—an actual toddler-sized rollercoaster!).
There are also ride-ons, slides, a playhouse with dolls and prams for role play, loads of musical toys, and a separate space with soft mats and smaller, baby-friendly toys too. It’s really lovely to see the kids mixing and playing while trying new things.
A Cuppa and a Breather (Yes, Really!)
One of the best bits for me though? You can actually sit down with a hot cup of tea and watch your little one play in a safe and friendly space. The atmosphere is super relaxed—no pressure at all—and everyone just seems really welcoming. It’s one of those places where you don’t feel judged if your child’s having an off day (we’ve all been there!).
It’s a great little social space for the grown-ups too, whether you fancy a quiet brew or a quick chat with another parent or carer. The volunteers who run the sessions are absolutely amazing and are always there to lend a friendly ear or have a little play with your children if you need a bit of a break. There's no judgement here, we are all here to help and support each other.
A Big Hit with Childminders Too
I have noticed it’s really popular with local childminders, and I can see why—there’s such a range of things to do and it gives the kids a chance to play with others in a group setting. The setup is ideal for mixed ages, so everyone’s included.
Bonus: A Lovely Park Right Next Door
Another bonus? There’s a brilliant little park just next to the car park, perfect for burning off any last bits of energy or enjoying lunch in the fresh air after the session. It’s a great way to round off the morning before heading home—especially if the sun’s out!
Worth a Visit
All in all, it’s just a brilliant, feel-good session that’s perfect for a little midweek outing. The kids have fun, you get a breather, and everyone leaves happy (and usually ready for a nap!).
If you’re thinking about going, definitely give it a try—you’ll be glad you did!
